From 14 July to 30 November 2025, the Dogs Trust Foundation in BiH will finance the neutering of owned dogs in the Sarajevo Canton in order to support humane control of the dog population, improve their well-being and support the mass neutering campaign of abandoned dogs of the Ministry of Economy and a humane, legal and systemic approach to the management of the dog population.
As part of this campaign, the Dogs Trust Foundation will finance the neutering procedure for about 1300 pets from the Sarajevo Canton, while the owners are obliged to cover chipping, the annual rabies vaccine, regular treatment against intestinal parasites, as well as other possible treatments that the veterinarian advises them within the framework of the protection of the health of their pets.
A total of 12 veterinary organizations from the CS will participate in this campaign, which applied to our call and met the legal prerequisites and Dogs Trust standards. This includes the requirement for each station to have 2 experts who have successfully completed the training funded and carried out by Dogs Trust in cooperation with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Sarajevo since 2012, as well as the consent for the recording of procedures to be supervised by Dogs Trust veterinary coordinators.
Dog owners can schedule free neutering of their pet directly with the veterinary station of their choice, the contact details of which can be found at https://dogstrust.ba/sterilizacija.
Please note that each individual station has a neutering limit of 110 dogs within this campaign, for 70 females and 40 males, and we advise owners to schedule the procedure as soon as possible.
Since 2012, the Dogs Trust through its programmes, including mass neutering and additional treatments for abandoned dogs, as well as free neutering for owned dogs, has achieved in BiH significant results with about 120,000 treated dogs, which has certainly reduced the influx of hundreds of thousands of new individuals who would most likely end up on the streets, improved the welfare of dogs, and contributed to the humane management of the dog population.
Our long-standing support is intended to support the initiatives of local actors, and especially local authorities and institutions that are the only ones who can and are obliged to ensure that legal, humane measures are consistently and continuously implemented, because this is the only way not to go in circles and that the problem of abandoned dogs is not repeated, but to gradually but surely solve it humanely and permanently.
We welcome the initiative of the Sarajevo Canton and invite all local authorities in BiH to follow this example, and to take advantage of our results and great heritage, and strengthen the initiative within the framework of dog population control, responsible ownership, humane adoption and good pet management.
