Spring is here – How to protect your dog from seasonal hazards?

With the arrival of spring and better weather, our dogs can finally enjoy longer walks and outdoor play. However, the awakening of nature also brings certain risks that we must not ignore. Ticks, allergens, dangerous plants and insects can pose serious problems to your pet's health. That is why it is important to take preventive measures and ensure them a safe and carefree spring.

1. Protection against ticks and fleas

As the temperature rises, ticks become more active and easily attach to a dog's fur. They can transmit dangerous diseases, so prevention is key.

How to protect your dog?

  • Use ampules, collars, or tick sprays.
  • After each walk, inspect the dog, especially the areas behind the ears, armpits and stomach.
  • Brush the fur regularly and, if you notice a tick, remove it immediately with tweezers or a special tool.

2. Spring plant and pollen allergies

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies. If you notice that your dog sneezes more often, rubs its eyes, licks its paws or scratches intensely, it is possible that the dog is reacting to pollen.

Allergy relief tips:

  • After the walk, wipe your paws and fur with a damp cloth to remove pollen.
  • Avoid areas with tall grass and flowering meadows.
  • If symptoms persist, consult your veterinarian about possible therapies.

3. Dangerous plants and grass – a hidden threat

Some spring plants and grasses can be toxic to dogs or cause irritation. Particularly dangerous are "foxtails" (barley, wild oats, wheat) whose sharp seeds can be driven into the skin, ears or nose of a dog.

How to avoid them?

  • When walking, avoid areas with tall grass.
  • Regularly inspect the dog’s paws, ears and the area between the toes.
  • If you notice redness, swelling, or that the dog shakes its head frequently, see a veterinarian.

4. Insects and chemicals – additional spring risks

Wasps, bees and other insects can cause allergic reactions if they bite or sting a dog. Also, pesticides and herbicides used on lawns can be toxic if the dog ingests them by licking their paws.

How to protect your dog?

  • Avoid lawns that have been freshly treated with chemicals.
  • Do not allow your dog to drink from puddles that may contain harmful substances.
  • If your dog gets an insect bite and you notice swelling or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary help immediately.

Bottom line: Let's enjoy spring, but be careful!

Spring brings many joys for us and our pets, but also new challenges. With proper protection and preventive measures, we can ensure that our dogs are healthy and happy throughout the season.

Regularly inspect your dog, use protective measures and be careful – because a healthy dog is a happy dog!
