Dogs Trust: Killing an innocent dog in Fojnica is a crime against the entire community

We make this address following the brutal, cruel, and morally and legally unacceptable crime committed against a completely innocent dog in Fojnica on Sunday, 11 June 2023.

Due to truly disturbing content, we do not publish on our channels photos that we have received and that have been published in some media.

As we were informed, the veterinarian on duty and the police went to the scene and carried out a detailed investigation, and the body of the dog was transported to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo for autopsy at the request of the Prosecutor's Office.

We would like to thank the Fojnica police administration, the Prosecutor's Office, as well as the veterinary community and local associations for their up-to-date response to this heartless, irresponsible and gruesome act, in which, by using firearms in the center of a populated city, tendentiously and without any reason, an innocent dog was killed, thus endangering citizens who could easily have been killed by the same weapon.

At the same time, we invite them to equally promptly initiate all legal measures in order for the perpetrator to face the consequences of this extremely inhumane act, and to inform the public about it and note that any inadequate treatment of animals is unacceptable and legally punishable, and that it will not be tolerated.

Cruelty to animals is an alarm for the entire society, and it is crucial to prevent anything similar in the future through consistent implementation of the state Animal Protection and Welfare Act and promoting the necessity of a humane approach to solving the problem of abandoned dogs.

Through its programs, which it has fully funded for the 11th year in BiH, the Dogs Trust invests significant efforts and funds to improve the welfare of dogs permanently and systematically through the implementation of humane measures for the management of the dog population prescribed by the Law, which are the key to the well-being of the entire community.

Responsible dog keeping and a humane attitude towards dogs who are on the street only because people are irresponsible are a prerequisite for safe and happy communities.

Therefore, we once again call on the competent institutions not only to respond to such misdeeds, but also to support measures to prevent irresponsible and inhumane, and especially brutal treatment of animals, and to take advantage of the significant support we provide in order to reach a common goal – that all dogs live with their responsible owners, and not be abandoned on the street. A dog that has been named man's best friend for a great reason certainly deserves it!
